According to a high-ranking defense official, the American military carried out a fatal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, killing four individuals.

“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a deadly attack on a vessel operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization in international waters. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were harmed.”

Context and Recent Actions

This announcement comes a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, vowing to escalate the military presence.

Only on Tuesday, the Pentagon stated it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Justifies Actions Amid Scrutiny

The government has encountered growing pressure to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a successful operation, arguing it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of lawful warfare.

Although the administration has stated the operation is about stopping drugs headed to the US, comments from a senior aide appeared to confirm a broader geopolitical aim. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff said the president “aims to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”

This suggests the series of strikes may be part of a push to remove Venezuela's current leadership.
