Louis Rees-Zammit is poised for a Wales rugby comeback with Wales next month, close to two full years following his departure from rugby in pursuit of an opportunity in American football. Aged 24, the winger is included in the 39-player team roster chosen by recently appointed Wales head coach Tandy.

American Football Chapter Closes

The British and Irish Lions winger, whose most recent cap came with the national team at the 2023 World Cup, transitioned to the NFL at the start of last year but ultimately failed to feature in a competitive league match. He came back to rugby union career last August when he joined the English club Bristol Rugby.

While Rees-Zammit has been sidelined Bristol’s previous two games because of a foot problem, he is not expected to be out long-term. The national side will to begin their November internationals facing Argentina on 9 November, before taking on Japan, the All Blacks, and South Africa.

Squad Overhaul Under Tandy

Tandy, until recently Scotland’s defence coach, has selected front-rower Rhys Carré, who had been not qualified to represent Wales due to the policy stipulating that players playing outside the country to hold no fewer than 25 international appearances. The prop has 20 internationals and now meets the criteria because he did not obtain an adequate deal to continue in Wales upon his return to Saracens in 2023.

Included as well are five uncapped players: front-rower Brodie Coghlan, second-row Fender, back-rower Morse, Cardiff prop Southworth, and Bath centre Hennessey. The group will be led by openside Morgan.

“It’s been really exciting assessing the options and understanding the quality available we possess,” commented the coach. “It’s a nice blend of emerging talent coming in, mixed with some experience too. My overall impression is full of promise and I can’t wait to bring the squad together in camp soon.”

Squad Updates and Exits

Veteran lock Rowlands, with 41 international appearances for his country, will not be involved and has announced his retirement with Wales. In addition, Cam Winnett and Keelan Giles could not be considered for the squad through fitness concerns.

In other news, National boss Townsend has named a 45-man squad including three new players: Edinburgh’s Liam McConnell, Harri Morris, Masibaka. Edinburgh’s Magnus Bradbury returns in contention for Scotland for the first time in years. Townsend’s side opens their autumn Tests facing the United States, before matches against the All Blacks, the Pumas, and the Ikale Tahi.
