🔗 Share this article Apex Legends' Specialized Traversal Techniques Are Going Mainstream During This Update Respawn Entertainment have a special treat in store for Apex Legends players, perfectly timed for the holidays. Enthusiasts of this game's highly fluid movement can rejoice to learn that a new movement mechanic will be introduced when the Amped season goes live on November 4th. Introducing Mantle Boosting Dubbed "Mantle Boosting" by Respawn, this ability gives players a burst of forward momentum when climbing over ledges and walls. As explained key developer Eric Canavese, this technique has unofficially existed of Apex Legends for some time, often called as "ledge boosting." But it's no easy feat for casual gamers, and is mainly used by competitive players in competitive play or esports competitions. This season, the team simplifies the process for players of all skill levels to execute these advanced movement boosts. "This technique existed in the game for a while, but executing it isn't easy to perform and gamers might not realize it [is in the game] without outside knowledge," Canavese explains. "We're adding a Mantle Boost indicator so players can clearly identify when and how to trigger the high-octane movement ability, making accessible the feature and adding new ways to compete for more players." The Reasoning Behind Opening Up Advanced Mechanics Why make a once niche movement quirk accessible to everyone? Principal designer Josh Mohan explains developers aims for players to experience empowerment — even those who are new. "Our community is doing advanced techniques like super-glides and tap-strafing, and we examined at our competition, looked at what our players are doing, and we said, 'What if we extend these capabilities to a broader audience?'" the designer explains. "Since right now, certain advanced [movement] mechanics are somewhat awkward to use — it requires to change controls and execute within one-frame windows. So we said, 'How about we make a more official implementation?'" The Amped Update Emphasis on Mobility Movement is largely the central theme in Season 27, with characters the gravity mage, Rampart, and the aerial combatant receiving buffs to maintain them in motion. Recovery time on her tactical ability is shorter, and this skill will propel players into the air much quicker than before. Her defensive walls now include a roof and the ability to provide movement bonuses to allies in range. But it's aerial this Legend receiving significant improvements this season, with multiple tweaks applied to make her more potent, quicker, and deadlier. "In my opinion many agree that her moment has arrived," states character developer the designer. "There's no doubt that she's been dominant in the past, but due to the addition of new Legends, movement[-based] passives, and redeployment tools, it seemed like she fell behind in current the game. This presented a really great opportunity for us to revisit a bunch of aspects [of her kit] and sort of bring her back to her glory days." Enhancements to the Aerial Legend To restore her competitive status in current strategies, the developer says Respawn assessed all her skills and introduced some powerful changes. Her jetpack received improvements, increasing her speed during flight, and the jets themselves now recharge much quicker, allowing her to spend more time in the air. Now she won't take damage from her ultimate ability, which was enhanced to mark enemies who are hit from it. Her Skyward Dive ability — which launches teammates into the air for repositioning or retreat — now takes much less time to activate. Additionally, she gains recently added Legend Upgrades that users can select to reduce fuel consumption, expand the spread of her Missile Swarm, or further speed up her ultimate takeoff time. "Her jet pack fulfills that jet-fighter fantasy," he comments. Map Changes Even the game's lone airborne map, this location, receives a mobility-focused overhaul, with major changes that opens up bottlenecks and makes claiming the high ground a bit less daunting. The developers state the game this update is all about providing gamers the resources required to compete in matches. "Really, we examined the game's core identity as a fast-paced FPS," says lead Legend designer Josh Mohan. The battle royale Season 27: Amped releases Nov. 4 at the specified times.
