Mikaela Mayer defeated Mary Spencer in Montreal to secure the combined 154-pound championship and become a triple-weight world champion.

This veteran US athlete delivered a commanding show at the Montreal Casino, outboxing the hometown favourite over 10 rounds.

Officials scored the bout 100-90, 98-92 and 98-92 as Mayer won the WBA crown and the vacant WBC and WBO championships.

"I have captured a World Boxing Organization belt before, but I've never had the WBA or WBC placed on me, so this is extra special," Mayer stated.

The fighter, who is also the current WBO titleholder at welterweight, earned her initial global championship at super-featherweight. Her record now boasts 22 victories and two defeats.

Match Analysis

Mayer quickly settled into her rhythm behind a precise lead punch, varying her offense to the opponent's upper and lower sections.

Although conceding two inches to the taller opponent, she controlled the range and pace for the entire fight.

The Canadian, aged 40, had brief success in the fourth round when a pair of straight rights connected, but Mayer regained control, ending the eighth with multiple strong punches and a clear decision win appeared inevitable.

Her rival was cut and marked under both eyes at the final bell as the Canadian suffered a third defeat in 13 fights.

"She is a strong, solid fighter. Credit to her, she was not obliged to accept this fight," Mayer commented. "She took a major gamble taking on a boxer of my caliber. I always come forward and put on demanding contests."

What's Next?

The champion restated her life-long goal of becoming an universally recognized titleholder after a second consecutive win.

She had hoped to meet Wales' a welterweight champion, the WBC welterweight champion, in an unification bout.

That bout collapsed mainly because of business and media complications.

Should a bout with Price - who is scheduled to be back in action in the UK in December - fails to happen next for Mayer, she could pursue undisputed status at 154 pounds against IBF champion another contender.

"The most important thing is that I can choose," Mayer stated.

"I'd love to achieve both - return to 147lb for total supremacy, then come back up and retain at 154lb."

A potential super-fight may also emerge in the works against Claressa Shields, the self-proclaimed 'Greatest Woman of All Time' and undisputed triple-division titleholder, who presently owns titles at the heaviest class.

American Shields, presently a free agent, is drawing offers from multiple representatives, such as one promotional firm.

If Shields decided to drop to 168 pounds, the American - although it is not a her usual division - has said she would happily face her at that weight.
